President’s Message – Linda Hunter

Well we had a great turn out for our June meeting.  Thank you to everyone for coming and bringing the ingredients for a great meal.  I felt that Cathie Turner's presentation regarding the history of Concerned Dog Owners of California, CDOC, and the current issues with AB1634 went very well.  I appreciate how CDOC is trying to be proactive with California's legislators and not reactive.  Due to the involvement of CDOC and other groups, AB1634 does not now include mandatory spay/neuter laws but Section 2 of the current bill would allow for a frivolous complaint to be made about an intact dog and the owner would incur a civil penalty for having that intact dog.  Walt Parsons, legislative liaison for our club, will keep us informed about what we can do to try and stop the passage of AB1634.  Cathie handed out information for writing your senator and letting them know you oppose AB1634.  If you have not already done so, it would be great to become a member of CDOC.  You can do this on their website at www.cdoc.org

Our next event will be having a booth at the Swiss Dog Day at Fort Mason on August 9th.  We will be using this event to count as one of our public education activities and  it would be great to see as many of our club members as possible there to support the Saint contingent.  If you can help with the booth that day, please contact Jann Hayes at bigdogmum@sbcglobal.net.
I am looking forward to our annual meeting/swim party and Doug and Penny's on August 16th.  Please see the specific details in this newsletter.  We have our committee members for our Fall Specialty Show in Pleasanton hard at work to put on another successful show.  If you can help us with setting up, ring stewarding, contributing to our luncheon or cleaning up, please contact Lovey at
h_olbrich@sbcglobal.net.

I look forward to seeing many of you at Swiss Dog Day and our August get together. Remember to keep your Saints cool and be aware of how hot roads and sidewalks can get in the summer also
.

Editor’s Notes – Lovey Olbrich

I have been newsletter editor for about twelve years now.  With my new responsibilities as club treasurer it seems to me that it is time to turn over the Tails to another club member.  If you think you would like to take on the pleasure of being editor, please let our club president, Linda Hunter, know. Once you have the mechanics under control, the effort takes 2 to 3 hours per issue.

Not much to report on our front.  I’ve been trying to learn how to use my digital camera more effectively and I have provided a few photos from our June Meeting for your enjoyment.  I am getting Ariel ready to show in Open obedience this fall and have entered her in some Rally trials as warm-ups (we haven’t been in the competition ring since last Fall).  Miranda is doing well enough – she is slowing down and her endurance is decreasing, but for those bursts that she does have she is her energetic, lively self.  One good thing about having the slower model Miranda is that I can now see and appreciate that core of sweetness of character that she has.  When she moved faster I did not enjoy it as I do now.

Rescue Report -- Lori Juenke

Lori reports that they are busy with dogs! No report this month.

11th Annual Swiss Dog Day Afternoon – Jann Hayes

On Saturday, August 9 at Ft. Mason in San Francisco.

This is a really fun day spent with all the Swiss breeds:  Bernese,  Greater Swiss, Entlebuch and Appenzell Mountain Dogs and Saint Bernards.

This year we will be hosting a booth, with information about Saints and about Saint rescue.  We'd like to have some volunteers to man the booth in shifts.  Bring your dogs and show them off.  There are always way more Berners and Swissys than Saints, so it would be nice to make a good  showing.

The activities include a Patriotic Parade, Carting Demonstrations, Swiss  Music, a great Raffle and Handmade Crafts and Souvenirs. There will be a  Swiss-Style Barbecue available for purchase. Enter your Swiss dog in one  of the many events during the day include Conformation, Obedience and  Rally Matches, AKC Canine Good Citizen Test, and Mountain Dog Olympics.

Pre-registration forms for the events will be available in May sometime at
http://www.goldengategsmdc.com/events.html, or on-site registration is available from 8 - 10 AM.

Legislative Happenings -- Walt Parsons

We had a very informative speaker at our last meeting but since I am not a shorthand reporter and  she covered a lot of material I won’t tell you everything she said.  Cathie Turner is an Executive Director of the Concerned Dog Owners of California.

AB1634

This bill was gutted by the chairman of the Local Government Committee and it makes the bill much more palatable BUT there is still a stinker factor.  If a dog is the subject of an UNVERIFIED or anonymous complaint it can be subjected to a fine and on the 3rd strike mandatory spay and neutering.  Even worse an officer responding to a complaint can check out any and all dogs on the property.  The amended AB1634 is much better than the original bill but it is still a stinker and should hopefully be rejected.  The bill is now in the Senate Appropriations committee.

Our speaker spoke to the subject that we should be working for the election of representatives and senators in our state government.   For example the Senator for the Walnut Creek area, Tom Torkleson is thankfully not running again so we want to make sure that his replacement is on our side.

SBCPC - The Working Dog -- Walt Parsons

Everybody so thoroughly enjoyed our 2007 Draft Test at Fieldstone Winery near Healdsburg that we decided to go there again.

At the last general meeting we formed a Test committee consisting of Chair-James Hunter, Sec’ty- Buddy Barr, & 3rd signer - Prentice Hayes.  The tentative date is 11/1/08, the 1st Saturday of November.

For judges we selected Newfy judge Rick Humphreys and our own 1st time judge Linda Hunter.

In the upcoming months James will be looking for workers including Grounds and Equipment, a Chief Steward, and stewards.  Please help out putting on this test.  Incidentally this test will be the 2nd of the two independent in the whole country and the only one on the west coast.  (The other test is in North Carolina.)

We have a brand new event this year.  We will be joining our Newfy friends in providing dog cart rides at the Kaiser Hospital “Teddy Bear Clinic” in the Fremont and Hayward hospitals.  This is a wonderful event where children are encouraged to bring their Teddy Bears to be triaged by Nurses and if necessary operated on by the Doctors.  You don’t even need to have a cart pulling dog since there is also a need for petting dogs and for crowd control.  (There’s always a kid or two who want to crowd their way into the lines in order to get multiple rides.)  For further information contact Walt Parsons closer to the events.

9/27 - Hayward.           10/11 - Fremont

Parades:

Once again we’ve been invited by the Newfy club to join them in the Walnut Festival parade on 9/13 in Walnut Creek.  This fun parade is always followed up by a BBQ at the Parsons’ home in Walnut Creek.

In December we’ll be going to the Pleasanton Holiday parade on 12/6/08.  Linda Hunter is in charge.  That’s all for now.
